Roofs are important part of our house for it protects us from rains, winds and the sun. Roofs are as necessary as the foundation of a building and a house. The roof is the part of the house that not only gives us protection; it also adds to the beauty of our house.

There are many types of roof and different materials are used to make them. The type of roof commonly used is the gable which allows the rain and the snow to run off the roof easily. The other types are: cross gable, flat, mansard, hipped and cross hipped, pyramidal, shed, saltbox, and gambrel.

Materials used to create roofs are asphalt, fiberglass, wood, clay, concrete, and metal. Asphalt roofs and fiberglass are more durable. When made into composition shingles, they are flexible and easily adapts to different applications. A good thing about this kind of roof is that they require low maintenance.

Roofs made up of wood makes the house breathe through the openings under its felt rows. It gives a more natural look to the house and gives insulation to the attic.

Clay materials are fireproof, and the material is cannot be damaged by insects. It also requires low maintenance but this material is very heavy. Houses using this material need more roof support to carry the weight of clay.

Concrete is resistant to rotting and insects. Although it requires low maintenance, it is more expensive than other roof materials.

Metal roofing is usually seen in architectural structured buildings and houses. These roofs are now found even in conventional houses in the suburban areas. Metal roofs are durable protection against wind, water, and heat elements of our home, expected to last longer, protecting our home for years. Metal roofing installations are done over an already existing roof or on newly built houses. Metal roofing prices are higher than that of asphalt roof. The metal used is also varied and it is available in aluminum, copper and steel. The strongest among these three is the steel and it has better chances in withstanding natural phenomenon such as hailstorms. Residential metal roofing are commonly used nowadays especially that it is a good protection from fire and it insulates the attic better.
